Anna Mae Herman Grunewald, 89, of Erie, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, September 20, 2022 at her residence. She was born August 7, 1933, a daughter of the late Earl Herman and Alice Bitters.

Ann graduated from Strong Vincent High School in 1952. She married her late husband Ken in 1952 and was very proud of the loving family they raised together. Ann and Ken had the opportunity to travel to various destinations such as Spain, Mexico, and Germany, and also to Florida for many golfing trips with close friends. Ann was an avid bowler for many years. One of her greatest accomplishments was being inducted into the PA Bowling Hall of Fame in 2004. She held many local offices and was a member of the 600 Club.

Ann was very involved in politics and the Republican Party. She was the first woman to run for the Mayor of the City of Erie in 1985. She was also the first woman chairperson of the Erie County Republican Committee, served as President of the Erie Council of Republican Women, Vice President of the Republican Foundation, and was a member of the Republican Committee and the State Committee.

As a life member of the Siebenbuerger Club Ladies Auxiliary, Ann resided as President of the Auxiliary for 28 years, ending her Presidency this past March 2022. She has been a member of Elmwood Avenue Presbyterian Church for several years where she served as an Elder, Usher, and an Auditor. Ann also served for several years as the chairperson for the church's annual Turkey Dinner.

In addition to her parents, Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth R. Grunewald; her son, Kenneth A. Grunewald; her sister, Dorothy Ponsford; her two brothers, Robert and Richard Herman; and her step-brother, Vernon Dickey.

She is survived by her daughters, Cheryl Scheloske (John) and Lisa Kendziora (John); five grandchildren, Chad Grunewald Zeller (Barbara), Stephen Scheloske (Jessica), Jamie Scheloske (Mike), Stephanie Kendziora (Donnie), and Amber Krzewinski (Kevin); ten great grandchildren, Devon Scheloske (Kaitlyn), Alena Lopez, Robbie Robison, Mason and Madison Scheloske, Gage Smith, Micah Edward, Colton Zeller, and Braxton and Harper Krzewinski; two sisters, Polly Adam and Phyllis Blackmer (Larry); and one brother, David Herman (Becky). She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call at the John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street, on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and may attend a Funeral Service on Monday at Elmwood Avenue Presbyterian Church, 2816 Elmwood Ave., at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Erie County Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made in Ann's name to the charity of one's choice.
