Betty M. Hosmer Bayer

Betty M. Hosmer Bayer, 90, of Erie, died peacefully at home on Saturday, July 23, 2016. She was born June 6, 1926 in Brookside, PA, a daughter of the late Carl and Violet Hosmer.

Betty was a graduate of Harborcreek High School and Orajean Beauty Academy Class of 1944.

She was a dedicated loving homemaker. Betty enjoyed gardening, horseback riding, sewing, knitting, creating unique Barbie doll clothing, and nature. She was a member of Fairview Saddle Club, active in McKean PTA, an Avon representative, and assistant Girl Scout leader.

Betty and her husband shared a love of horses, traveling, ballroom dancing, raising and training German Shepherds, collecting antiques, sailing, and their cats and dog Teddy.

Betty was a past member of the German Shepherd Club of Erie County, Erie Yacht Club, Erie Power Squadron, and the Erie YMCA; where she was award "Swimmer of the Year" two years in a row.

In addition to her parents Betty was preceded in death by her son, Jack R. Bayer and her sister, Frances Lorei.

She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Richard E. Bayer of Erie; two daughters, Sandy Whitford of Erie and Kristen (Bayer) Mattis and her husband Richard of Palmyra, PA; sister, Shirlee Brady and her husband Hal of Deland, FL; grandsons, Jeff Whitford of Northern, CA and Edward Mattis and his wife Lori of Cornwall, PA; and granddaughters, Kellie Lee and husband Chris of Nevada, AZ, Barbra (Bayer) Boutin and husband Mark of Tallahassee, FL and Michele (Mattis) Knott and husband Joe of Palmyra, PA. Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren.

Friends are invited to call at the John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Service there at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Dunn Valley Cemetery.
