Carmela M. Abate Leone

Carmela M. Abate Leone, 88, of Erie, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2023 surrounded by her loving family. She was born February 8, 1934 in Fiummefreddo Bruzio Cosenza, Italy, a daughter of the late Domenico and Maria Catero Abate.

Carmela immigrated to the United States in 1961. She worked for Metro Health Center for 21 years and at UPMC Hamot.

She was a member of Saint Paul Church, their Ladies Auxiliary, and volunteered at their Bingo.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony A. Leone; a brother, Joseph Abate; and three brothers-in-law, Francesco Scavella, Settimio Guerriero, and Antonio Carbonelli.

She is survived by her three daughters, Susan Baskit, Frances Sigler (Peter) and Michelle Sigler (Mark Sigler, Sr.); brother, Francesco "Frank" Abate, three sisters, Sara Scavella, Adua Guerriero, and Domenica Carbonelli; sister-in-law, Dorothy Abate; eleven grandchildren, Jessica Baskit (Aaron Falk), Noah Baskit, Giuliana Leone, Anthony Sigler, Dominic Sigler, Angelo Sigler, Marcello Sigler, Victoria Sigler (Lazaro Clausell), Mark Sigler, Jr., Rylee Sigler, and Joshua Lata. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Julian, Javier, Natalya, and Christian, great-niece and caregiver, Carmela Reeves and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Friends are invited to call on Thursday at the John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and may attend a Prayer Service there on Friday at 11:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at Saint Paul RC Church, 1617 Walnut Street, at Noon.
