George T. Vlahos

George T. Vlahos, 85, of Erie, went home to be with our Lord on Monday, January 2, 2017 at Saint Vincent Health Center. He was born May 28, 1931 in Erie, a son of the late Thomas M. and Julia Turowski Vlahos.

George started college later in life and worked a 40 hour week while attending classes. He was the first male to take courses at Mercyhurst College and was a graduate of Gannon College.

He was a math, physics and chemistry teacher in the Erie School District for 22 years, retiring in 1984. In addition to teaching George was a tax preparer which, upon his retirement, evolved into a successful family business Vlahos Accounting, Inc.

He was a member of the Nuova Aurora Club and the Retired Teachers Association and a life member of the Erie Maennerchor Club. He was also a member of Blessed Sacrament Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister.

He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and had the memorabilia to show it. He was so proud of the Cubs winning the World Series. If it wasn't the Yankees then it had to be the Cubs!

He loved his family especially his wife Columbia and would still get a sparkle in his eye every time he saw her. There is no greater love than theirs.

He took great pride in his children's and grandchildren's achievements. If you talked to him you could see him shine when he spoke about his wife and family.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his great-grandson, Dominic Pagliari; his sisters, Joni Colonna and Lucille Hutzler; and brother, Michael Vlahos. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Columbia Fargiorgio DiPlacido Vlahos of Erie; three daughters, Deborah Pagliari, RNFA (Raymond), Corinne Dyakon, RPh (William), and Darlene Vlahos, Esq. all of Erie; and one son, Patrick Vlahos, D.O. of Pittsburgh, PA; sister-in-law, Maria Vlahos of Peabody, MA; 14 grandchildren, Michelle Maslanka, Nicholas Pagliari, Brian Vlahos, Stephen Pagliari, Jennifer Vlahos, Erin Bosley, Anthony Pagliari, William Dyakon, Jr., Christopher Dyakon, Sarah Peebles, Karren Vlahos, Rebecca Vlahos, Katelynn Vlahos, and Hannah Vlahos. He is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Additional calling hours will be held on Friday at Saint Mary's at Asbury Ridge, 4855 West Ridge Road, from 9 to 10 a.m.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1626 West 26th Street, at 11 a.m. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum.
