James J. Fuhrman Sr.

James J. Fuhrman Sr., age 77, of Erie died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, April 1, 2007 at Saint Vincent Health Center.

He was born September 19, 1928 in Erie, a son of the late Thomas J. and Mary C. Pfister Fuhrman. He lived in Erie his entire life. He was a graduate of Cathedral Preparatory School where he lettered in several varsity sports. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He worked for the City of Erie Police Department for 38 years, retiring as a Detective Sergeant in 1994. He served on the Board of Directors for Our Lady of Mount Carmel Men’s Council and was also an usher. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #7, the Siebenbuerger Club and the Erie Maennerchor Club. He was an associate member the Sister’s of Saint Joseph and made Cursillo number 184.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Fuhrman and a sister, Sr. Miriam Fuhrman. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Alice M. DiMarco Fuhrman; two daughters, Lisa A. Smith and her husband Staff Sgt. Andrew Smith currently serving with the United States Air Force in Kuwait and Maria C. Smith and her husband Matthew; two sons, James J. Fuhrman Jr. and Patrick M. Fuhrman and his wife Marilyn Manko; two brothers, Thomas Fuhrman and his wife Eleanor and David Fuhrman all of Erie and two sisters, Bernadette Beck of Erie and Mary Lou Drexler of Rochester, NY. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, James III, Michael, Nicole, Ali and Annamarie Fuhrman, Jeremy, Elise and Samantha Smith and Courtney Hoover all of Erie and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street, an Independent Care Group Affiliate, on Monday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and may attend a service there on Wednesday at 8:45 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 1553 East Grandview Blvd., at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
