Joseph L. Calabrese, age 83, of Erie, died peacefully Monday, April 9, 2007 at his residence.

He was born February 1, 1924 in Erie a son of the late Serafino and Maria Grazia Vitale Calabrese. He lived in Erie his entire life. He served in the United State Navy during WWII aboard the submarine USS Greenling. He worked for G.E. for 36 years, retiring in 1983. He was a life member of the Nuova Aurora Club, a member of the American Legion and the USS Submarine Veterans of WWII. He was a former member of St. Andrews Athletic Association and coached football there for 10 years. He enjoyed woodworking, golfing, bowling and gardening and was a volunteer at Saint Andrews Food Pantry.

He was preceded in death by a son, Michael J. Calabrese in 1975; five bothers, Guido, David, Peter, John and Albert Calabrese and a sister, Iola Calabrese.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary R. Rodriguez Calabrese; one son, James L. Calabrese and his wife Marcia; one daughter, Mary Grace Umpleby; five grandchildren, Lisa Lubak and her husband Doug, Lori Mraz and her husband Gregg and Emily, Janine and John Calabrese all of Erie and two great grandchildren, Mia and Ava Lubak. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street, an Independent Care Group Affiliate, on Wednesday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and may attend a service there on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at Saint Andrews Church, 1116 West 7th Street, at 11:00 a.m. Burial with military honors will be in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Saint Andrew Food Bank, 1116 West 7th St., Erie, PA 16502.
