Richard J. Garcia died peacefully on Tuesday night at the age of 67. The Butler born journalist and retired U.S. Navy officer is survived by his three adoring children, Barbara Pados, Nicole Garcia, and Garrett Garcia and by his four beautiful grandchildren, Bethany, Scott, Carey Rose, and Christopher.

From 1971-81 Richard served the community as a reporter for the Erie Daily Times and Sunday Times-News. Following his work at the Times, Richard was appointed Assistant Professor of Communications at Mercyhurst College and served as the Director of the Communications Department. His passion for writing and storytelling were immediately apparent to anyone who met him.

Richard proudly served his country for years as a U.S. Navy and U.S. Navy Reserve Officer in the capacity of journalist and public affairs specialist. Earning the rank of Lieutenant Commander and numerous achievement awards he served during Desert Shield and Desert Storm and was deployed to the Balkans during Operation Provide Promise where he supported the United Nations peace mission.

A loving husband, father, and grandfather, Richard will be deeply missed. A memorial service will be held at Our Lady of Peace RC Church, 2401 West 38th St., on Saturday at 10 a.m. The John R. Orlando Funeral Home, Inc., 2122 Raspberry Street, is handling arrangements.
